The last we heard about the attempted remake of 'Akira' was that the film stalled out in development, with Jaume Collet-Serra leaving the project because of budget disputes, and with Garret Hedlund attached to star, but things have mostly been quiet for the last year. Well, the project is back on and Collet-Serra is in talks to return to the director's chair.

That's the latest news from Variety, and perhaps we have another 'Lone Ranger'-type situation on our hands where a project that probably shouldn't be made is returning from the dead. The project stalled out because Warner Brothers was nervous about the proposed $90 million budget, which sounds awfully low for the scale of the original.

The 1988 animated version of 'Akira,' which was based on the graphic novel by Katsuhiro Ohtomo, followed biker kids led  by Kaneda. Among them, Tetsuo was the weakest, but when he's experimented on by the military, he gains psionic powers that can level cities. And as he was bullied when powerless, he plots revenge with his new gifts. Much of the same story was either intentionally or unintentionally used in the recently found-footage hit 'Chronicle,' and if they follow the plot of the original, that's what many will think of when this live action 'Akira' is released. Warner Brothers seems set on making this, so it's expected to start shooting in 2014, and may well hit screens in 2015.
