‘Hunger Games’ Director Clarifies Philip Seymour Hoffman’s Remaining ‘Mockingjay’ Scenes and Effie’s Role

Earlier today, Lionsgate released our first official look at ‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1,’ the third installment of the blockbuster franchise led by Jennifer Lawrence. Not only did we get our first look at newcomer Julianne Moore as District 13′s President Coin, we also glimpsed the late Philip Seymour Hoffman, who passed away before finishing his work and would reportedly be inserted into more scenes through special effects. To calm fans’ nerves a bit, however, director Francis Lawrence has finally addressed the matter.

The official ‘Hunger Games’ viral website, which also housed the first photos of ‘Mockingjay,’ published a lengthy roundtable discussion with Lawrence, producer Nina Jacobson and screenwriter Peter Craig on the forthcoming installment, in which Lawrence himself said of Hoffman and finishing up his remaining scenes:

We finished the majority of his work. I think he might have had 8 to 10 days left on our schedule. In most of those scenes, Phil didn’t have any dialogue. We are going to put him into those scenes, but we’re only using real footage. We’re not creating anything digital or a robotic version of him.

Continued Jacobson, “We might give a line of Plutarch’s to Haymitch or Effie, but only in circumstances that we are able to do that without undermining the intent of the scene.”

An earlier report led fans to believe the actor would be digitally recreated through the use of CGI, so we can all rest a little easy. In addition, Lawrence said of Hoffman’s role, “This is the movie where Phil shows us who Plutarch really is, and he is great in this movie, hitting on Plutarch’s sense of humor and his political maneuvering.”

Fans of Effie Trinket and Elizabeth Banks can also rest easy. While the ‘Mockingjay’ book doesn’t feature the bubbly, high fashion-forward character much at all, she will be featured much more in the film version. Said Lawrence:

In the book, Fulvia basically replaces her. But how can anybody replace Elizabeth Banks as Effie Trinket in these movies? When Suzanne Collins saw ‘Catching Fire,’ she called and one of the first things she said was, ‘There’s no way Effie Trinket cannot be in the ‘Mockingjay’ films.’ Effie brings such warmth and fun and levity to these dark stories. She’s the fish out of water in this one and fans will love how she adapted to the world of District 13.

“What makes Effie interesting is that she does not want to be there,” continued Jacobsen. “Unlike Plutarch, she does not want to be part of the revolution. She has to be convinced to help, and she helps for personal reasons, not for political reasons.”

‘The Hunger Games: Mockingjay, Part 1′ comes out in theaters this November 21, while ‘Part 2′ is set for release on November 20, 2015.
