‘L.A. Confidential’ TV Series: Sequel Adaptation from New Regency and James Ellroy

LA Confidential TV Series Sequel
Warner Bros.

It’s been a good long while since we’ve heard anything from TNT’s Frank Darabont-helmed ’50′s drama ‘Lost Angels‘ (formerly ‘L.A. Noir‘) but it seems like the drama may have a bit of thematic competition. New reports claim that New Regency will adapt James Ellroy’s novel ‘L.A. Confidential’ (yes, it was a movie too) for a sequel series, but what network might it end up on?

The concept of ’50s California detective drama has been mined sparingly in the last few years, but it looks like New Regency might be taking its most popular example to series. Deadline reports that the production company and original author James Ellroy have begun shopping a TV sequel series version of ‘L.A. Confidential, which itself formed the basis of the Oscar-winning 1997 film starring Kim Basinger, Kevin Spacey, Guy Pearce, Russell Crowe, Danny DeVito and James Cromwell. The movie previously inspired a pilot in 2003 starring Kiefer Sutherland (which is included with the 1997′s special edition DVD and Blu-ray release), but it never went to series.

The sequel series would continue the themes and stories of the original ‘L.A. Confidential,’ a murder-mystery drama that spanned organized crime, police corruption, celebrity and tabloid journalism in 1950s Los Angeles. Ellroy and New Regency are reportedly shopping the series to both broadcast and cable, as well as newly emerging formats, with several interested parties.

We’d be interested in any series set during the stylized allure of 1950s Los Angeles, but what say you? Would you want to see an ‘L.A. Confidential’ sequel TV series? Check out the film’s original trailer and let us know what you think!
