It’s been a couple of years now, you can finally watch Mel Gibson in ‘The Beaver’ without thinking about his personal life.

The Beaver was directed by Jodie Foster, starring Mel Gibson, their first film together since 1994′s Maverick. It didn’t do well at the box office, most believed because of the scandals surrounding Mel’s life at the time.

Walter Black (Mel Gibson) suffers from manic depression and sleeps most of the day. This causes strife with his wife Meredith (Jodie Foster) who kicks him out of their home. After failed suicide attempt, Walter wants to change his life for the better. Walter then begins carrying a beaver puppet to talk to himself using it to give himself positive affirmations. Walter seems to begin making progress, but then Beaver has ideas of his own.

The film is rated PG-13 for mature thematic material, some disturbing content, sexuality and language including a drug reference. Some of the situations involving Walter’s mental illness may be disturbing to younger viewers. That said, it’s a warm, often funny film that is well acted by Gibson, Foster and the entire cast; including Star Trek’s Anton Yelchin and Hunger GamesJennifer Lawrence.

The next time you get a chance, watch the film and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
