‘Sinister Six,’ ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3′ and ‘Uncharted’ Get Release Dates

Sony

With Comic-Con 2014 less than 24 hours away from its grand start, the internet is a flurry of missed flights and scheduling headaches and excitement and worry and Hall H line preparation and … release dates? Yep, the studios are capitalizing on the Comic-Con excitement to announce the release dates of some very geek-friendly films and Sony took the chance to let everyone know when they’ll be able to see ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3,’ ‘Sinister Six‘ and ‘Uncharted.’

There’s no need to get too sexy with the prose here. Just the facts:

‘Uncharted’ will be released on June 10, 2016.

‘Sinister Six’ will hit theaters on November 11, 2016.

‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3′ will arrive sometime in 2018, but no exact day has been specifically mentioned.

The big news here is that ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 3′ has been pushed back two whole years. In fact, it was originally set to be released on the date that ‘Uncharted’ now occupies. Believe it or not, this is a good thing. You’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who thought ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2′ was a worthwhile endeavor, and the box office results reflected that. The key to keeping this franchise alive is to put some distance between installments and take the whole thing into the shop for some extensive repairs and refurbishment. Absence makes the heart grow fonder and two extra years allow for a decent script to be written.

Almost as surprising as that delay is the news that ‘Sinister Six’ is still happening. The past few weeks have been filled with rumors that Drew Goddard‘s villain-centric spin-off was dead in the water, but Sony has just doubled down it it, giving it prime real estate. We’re not sold on a ‘Sinister Six’ movie (at least not one set in the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ universe), but we’re totally sold on Goddard. He’s a genius and he should be allowed to do whatever the heck he wants.

And that brings us to ‘Uncharted,’ which, as you may know, is based on the insanely popular video game series that’s the closest thing the 21st century has to Indiana Jones. This project is still shrouded in mystery (there’s no cast yet) and we have no idea if Seth Gordon is the guy to bring this kind of adventure romp to the big screen, but we have hope. And if Sony is smart, they’ll treat this project with care. They need successful franchises like whoa and this has some pretty huge potential.
